Australian Open 2014: Stanislas Wawrinka beats Rafa Nadal to win grand slam title

Stanislas Wawrinka was, in his first major final at the Australian Open, facing world No. 1 Rafael Nadal -- who he had never even taken a set off in 12 previous matches.

Nadal looked sharp in disposing of Roger Federer in the semifinals and not many thought he wouldn't complete the deal against the 17-time grand slam winner's fellow Swiss, even if Wawrinka upset three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

But not for the first time in Melbourne, an injury to Nadal early in an encounter hampered the Spaniard and Wawrinka opened his grand slam account with a stunning 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-3 victory.

Wawrinka told "It's quite crazy what's happening right now," the 28-year-old told reporters later. "I never expected to win a grand slam. I never dreamed about that because for me, I was not good enough to beat those guys."

"Bad luck was against me today but you really deserved it so congratulations," Nadal, wiping away tears, told the crowd post match in a scene reminiscent of Federer's runner-up speech in 2009. "Sorry to finish this way. I tried very, very hard."

After Serena , Sharapova became the victim of lower back

                                                           

Third-seeded Sharapova struggled with her serve starting from the eighth game, when she was broken at love while trying to serve out the first set.

She was broken in four straight games as Cibulkova raced to a 5-0 lead in the second set, during which time Sharapova only won three points on her own serve.
The four-time major winner rallied to win four straight games before Cibulkova held serve to level the match. After taking an off-court medical time out after the second set for what appeared to be a lower back problem, she had seven double-faults in the third set.

Longest match in Tennis

                                                                       

WIMBLEDON, England -- When The Match That Would Not End finally did, at 70-68 in the fifth set, after a record 11 hours, 5 minutes spread over three days, the customary handshake between opponents simply would not suffice.
So when John Isner of the United States won the longest match in tennis history and went to the net to greet Nicolas Mahut of France, who -- for lack of a better word -- lost Thursday at Wimbledon, Isner pulled Mahut in for a hug.
"You know," Isner told the crowd moments later, "it stinks someone had to lose."
Quite true.
There were 980 points overall, and Mahut won more, 502-478. There were 711 points in the fifth set, and Mahut won more, 365-346.
